For me the Lakes have usually been a break in the journey north to Scotland. The miles roll by, I decompress as I go, and my southern eyes start to pop at the first sight of Lakeland. I do not know the Lakes well. They seem sprawling and complicated, photographed to the millimetre, and my mind has always wanted to go further north, to wilder places.

One winter I was lucky in my companion. Paul has spent a lot of time among the hills and lakes of Cumbria, and he took me up Shepherd's Crag above Borrowdale. It was five below at the top, the wind was rising and my gloved hands fumbled with the tripod. The light poured over the crags around Borrowdale, winking in and out as the clouds scudded by. Thirty minutes later my hands were numb and the light had gone behind the hills. Paul wondered if that had been the best light of the trip. I hoped it was not, just as much as I hoped it was!
