Yorkshire landscape prints
The Dales, the North York Moors and the coast from Whitby to Robin Hood's Bay
My landscape photography started in Yorkshire, on a course in Whitby with Joe Cornish over twenty years ago. It is wide open moor falling away into a rugged coastline, harsh in winter, with some of the most beautiful landscape south of Scotland. On my first trip into the Dales I chased the light from one valley to the next and walked four miles to Gunnerside Gill with a 20kg pack. It took me years to properly appreciate the light up here. Whitby fish and chips I appreciated straight away!
I stayed away from Whitby for ten years or so. Going back to the beginning felt uncomfortable. When I did, I stood in the graveyard with my tripod in the holes left by others and watched the sun dip below the headland into the sea: a cliche, I enjoyed it enormously. Down the coast at Robin Hood's Bay I had the most intense hour of photography in years, on a May morning with storm clouds and dawn light over the sea. It lasted until the light turned hard and my stomach won the argument for a cooked breakfast.
These are the prints from those trips.
